Do You Need Hardwood Resurfacing? Look for Signs of Wear and Tear

Hardwood flooring can last a lifetime, but at some point you may need resurfacing to spruce up its appearance. As wood ages, the floor's protective coating begins to wear thin, and scratches become more apparent. To prevent damage to your floor, look for the following signs that indicate hardwood resurfacing is needed.

Less Water Resistance

To test your hardwood flooring's protective finish, try this water test recommended by the American Hardwood Information Center. Drop about a tablespoon of water on the floor. Watch for the drops of water to bead on the surface of your flooring. If this happens, your finish is still intact and the water is not penetrating the wood. If the water leaves a slight stain after a few minutes, you will know that the finish is beginning to wear and you should keep an eye on it. But if the water immediately soaks into the hardwood, you will need to have a new topcoat applied or risk damage to your flooring.

Increasingly Obvious Nicks and Surface Scratches

No matter how hard you try to keep pets and kids from scratching or denting your floors, over time you will begin to notice more imperfections. Hardwood resurfacing helps maintain your floor's beautiful appearance by sanding only the top layer to remove surface scratches. The resurfacing process does not alter the original color of your hardwood floor. After resurfacing, ZEROREZ® technicians will apply a long-lasting layer of polyurethane to preserve your flooring.

Floors Lose Their Shine

According to the National Wood Flooring Association, the color of wood flooring changes naturally over time. Aside from the aging process, color changes result from the amount of sunlight hitting the floor and the specific type of protective finish used. One way to minimize color change is to place down mats or rugs to limit the amount of sunlight that can fade the hardwood. Rotate the rugs as needed to prevent uneven discoloration.

Also, as dust and dirt accumulate over time, the clean shine of your hardwood may seem to fade. Repeated liquid spills can also damage the finish along with the wood base. To preserve the natural look and color of your floors and restore the shine, the final step in the resurfacing process is to apply a new protective topcoat.

After years of enduring foot traffic and normal wear and tear, your hardwood floors may be ready for a resurfacing. Let the technicians at ZEROREZ® enhance the look of your floor in one quick and easy appointment.
